One player it seems I’m higher on than many in the #FFcommunity, and even among my fellow @TheUndroppables, is Sage Surratt from Wake Forest. He caught my eye in 2019 with his excellent sophomore season catching 66 passes for 1,001 yards and 11TDs in 9 games. But am I wrong?...
2) Sage decided to opt out of 2020 due to covid after ending 2019 short with a shoulder injury. He had earned 1st team all-ACC and was a Biletnikoff award semi-finalist, & was on the watch list for Biletnikoff, Wuerffel, and Maxwell awards in 2020 pre-opt out. Ready to dominate..
3) Since Sage didn’t play in 2020 a lot of people forgot how good he was. People questioned his physicality and athleticism, and limited experience. We all had to wait to the Senior Bowl to see Sage again. Unfortunately we just got good practice reps...
4) With talks of him struggling with separating with his hands in practice, and not playing in the game, his Senior Bowl experience did nothing to improve his stock. However, he showed prowess in route running in practice despite his lack of hands separation as Brad points out... https://twitter.com/bradkelly17/status/1354266048913170432
5) So it’s back to 2019 tape to evaluate the type of NFL WR Sage can be. He excels at winning the 50-50 jump ball, using his body to shield himself from the CB. More physical DBs will be all over him if he doesn’t use his hands more, like we saw at the Sr. Bowl. His size tho

6) The interesting thing about his hands is once he was coached to use them to separate at the Sr. Bowl practice he succeeded. His hands are big (enough) but he snatches the ball out of the air on jump balls, which I would guess is why he hasn’t needed much separation to win...
7) Again it’s weird that he wasn’t using his hands enough because we can see him do just that in this clip, tracks the ball, creates space with his long arms, and catches the home run TD. This catch reminds me of AJ Green so much. Tall, long, WR that is a redzone threat...
8) Here we see a closer look at the same play. He uses his hands & body to get a release off the LOS, but he needs to be more physical or NFL DBs will push him off this line. Sage is great at getting his defender upfield & turning back for the catch, he just needs to refine it...
9) Overall, Sage is a good WR who possesses some raw skills that can make him great with the right coaching and development. In a stacked WR class he drops to the 4th-5th round in the NFL draft, & hopefully lands with a team that can develop him...
10) For rookie drafts I would target him in the 3rd/4th round depending on your draft mates. I know mine don’t like him so I’m hoping to snag him in the 4th as a taxi stash for 2022+ At his best he’s a deep target, jump ball WR with TD-dependent upside...
