When I was a kid I’d have sleepovers with my friends and we would stay up late making prank calls. We called grocery stores and asked if they had cotton balls, and when they said yes, we’d ask, “Do they tickle when you walk?” Stuff like that.
Sometimes we punched in random numbers in our area code late at night and if someone picked up, we’d do the whole “Is your refrigerator running” bit. After the first few, we couldn’t event get the question out, we were laughing so hard.
One night, it was my turn to do it and I asked the question, and the man’s voice on the other end said, “Is your name Mickey Fisher?”
I froze for a second, then I slammed the phone down, terrified. I didn’t sleep for weeks. I was paranoid all the time. How did he know my name? This was way before caller ID.
Over the years I thought about that night from time to time. I moved. My parents moved. They got rid of that land line and we all got cell phones. Eventually, I forgot all about it.
Then last night, just when I was falling asleep, my cell phone rang. I thought it was a robo-call but when I looked, I recognized the number. It was our old land line.
I picked it up, and immediately heard a group of giggling kids on the other end. And a kid voice said, “Is your refrigerator running?”
I thought, “There’s no way this is happening.” So I said, “Is your name Mickey Fisher?”
He hung up. I tried the number again.

It was disconnected.
