Today in the Senedd today I raised concerns that had been shared with me that some care homes had been excluded from the Welsh Government’s target of vaccinating all care home staff and residents by the end of January.
This is an issue covered in this important story by the @caerphillyobsvr, where a manager asks why her small care home in Caerphilly Borough Council is being excluded. “To me, we are being discriminated against because we are a small home," she says. https://caerphilly.observer/news/998657/care-homes-confused-over-vaccination-progress-claims/
Responding later, the Health Minister claimed that “the target was about older person care homes”. NOT TRUE. When announcing the vaccination strategy, he said, “By the end of January, *all* care home residents and staff will have been offered their first dose of the vaccine.”
Care homes for residents with learning disabilities should NOT be excluded from the first group of priority vaccinations. They often have complex needs & are more vulnerable to illness. This broken promise is yet another betrayal of care homes by the Labour Welsh Government.
