In 2020 my team struggled with attending & getting the most from virtual PD events (conferences, workshops, lectures) while working remotely, so today I sent an email in advance of #OLASC asking them to practice the following things to prioritize their conference participation:
1. Turn on your out-of-office:
Manage the expectations of others by letting them know you're busy attending a virtual conference, and you'll get back to them when it's over. Email is distracting, so heck, do yourself one better and CLOSE your email altogether.

2. Decline or reschedule meetings:
Behave as if you're physically away attending the event. If you were there in-person you wouldn't be able to miss a conference session to attend a bi-weekly committee, so don't do that now.

3. Turn off work-related Slack notifications:
You don't need additional distractions about work-related tasks/conversation. Be in the moment, focus, and prioritize the PD event you're attending. Dare I say, even hide your phone if you lack the self-discipline.

What other behaviours do you practice for virtual PD events to help focus, mitigate distractions, prioritize the PD event, and get the most out of it while working remotely? #OLASC
