Mōrena let’s set the record straight I support farming or I wouldn’t have lectured at Lincoln for 10yrs. I’m merely saying many in and out of NZ aren’t as convinced that stabilising methane is ‘being ambitious in all efforts’ as we pledged in Paris-this is a fair question #nzpol
The science of methane is different, it doesn’t hang around in atmosphere for centuries like carbon & NZ farming is v efficient & milk exports make a huge amount of money for the country & yes may suit oil & gas interests if methane was cut harder to buy them xtra transition time
& yes our target split for methane may be a handy internal accounting tool. But trying to create a culture war, of urban vs rural or trying to fire up a fight of scientist versus scientist may be good for building political party or NGO membership but it isn’t helping NZ overall
in many ways I don’t see any difference between what happened in dairy conversions to what is happening with house prices now- people made economic choices responding to market signals -now we have to cooperate to solve a tough problem because Paris puts pressure on NZ to do more
At each international climate meeting NZ will be pressured by peers/trade partners to show we are not free-riders ie that we are doing all we can to reduce our contribution to climate change (& we are not small we are influential eg farming) & protecting people/planet from harm
Thanks for getting to the end of the thread & have a beautiful day
