now that i’ve thought about it more and slept on it and seen other peoples takes, i am going to expand on what i stated yesterday
this is not a vague tweet/thread. i am saying here and now that this is about the attorney au.

taking a character who is a victim of child/spousal abuse in canon and turning them into a narcissistic abusive homophobe is not groundbreaking realism. the medium of twitter fic/smau allows for the creation of unique stories, but it does not really serve as an adequate
vehicle for this type of subject matter. i can’t tell ANYONE what to write/what not to write. but anyone is allowed to level out reasonable, constructive criticism towards something that is potentially harmful because of its real world implications.
because i keep seeing this topic brushed off as “discourse”, i will say: if it’s only reading to you as discourse, that’s probably because the conversation is about eddie being ooc and not the larger, broader issue of the way this fandom generally fucking sucks at handling
the topic of eddie’s abuse no matter the context. in the same way you cant remove richie from the context of his experiences with homophobia, internalized or otherwise, eddie’s character cannot RESPONSIBLY be removed from his experiences as a victim of abuse.
no work of fiction is above criticism. if people feel that a story contains a damaging narrative re: really anything, it isn’t a personal attack on anyone to attempt to bring this to light. however—i do agree that the tendency to vague tweet or aggressively miss the point
does not help even when people think they are spreading positivity. the victim in this situation is not the fictional character eddie kaspbrak. if you have something to say, say it confidently. cyclical tweets about how eddie is a good person don’t really help.
but helping to foster a dialogue about the sensitivity of portraying abuse in fiction IS helpful. i am not unfollowing or sb’ing anyone over this. if you would like to discuss this further, my dms are open. but we ALL have to behave.
