Relationships and referrals are everything in this business, but what they don't tell you is that the way you can get them can be SO random and bizarre. Here is my story:
My VO reps were via a referral from a friend I met on here. I wasn't even active on twitter until a few months ago, when someone shared a video of mine parodying voice actors in quarantine. It was viewed by several thousands & I suddenly got swept up in the VO twitter community.
Since then, you all know what I do on here, basically just tweet out a bunch of horny jokes and random thoughts. But that's still grown my following quite a bit; it's connected me to a lot of artists and now friends, one of whom referred me to 7 different agencies.
I signed with my Atlanta agent because somehow this 40-something dude and I started following each other on ig. I'd reply to his DMs & after a few monthsI realized he was repped in the SE. I asked if he could refer me to his agency. He said yes, and pushed pretty hard for me.
Lastly, when I was doing a play in DC called THE WOLVES, these two young girls who were big fans of the show asked if I would come on their youtube show for an interview. No one else in the cast said yes but I did.
A few months later, I reached out and asked one of the girl's moms about agent advice, since she was still largely the one managing her career. She out of the blue offered to refer me to her daughter's agency, which landed me a meeting and I still freelance with them today.
I didn't realize at the time that the girl was a working actress (she is about to be a series regular on an HBO Max show).

My other reps were more traditional - I did a manager showcase in NYC, and my friend from acting class referred me to a commercial agency she worked at.
But still, I think it's hilarious how random and unpredictable the origins of most of these connections are. So keep saying yes and being nice to people, keep posting content and being active on social media, and you never know where it'll take you! 🙌🏽
