Every single critic of "cancel culture" just thinks the wrong people are getting canceled.

If the distinction between legitimate criticism and "cancellation" is just tone and purpose, then the term is meaningless.

Similarly, if we're only talking about explicit calls for someone to be fired, then we don't need a special term for it.
Gaaaaahhhhh this is my entire point! If people are being canceled for "pretend thought crimes," then you don't have a problem with cancellation. You have a problem with *which views* are getting canceled.
"It's OK to criticize people for terrible behavior but it's not OK to say that McWhorter's rhetoric is similar to that of white supremacists."

What are we even doing here? If McWhorter's views aren't terrible then say they're not terrible! Don't cast his critics as tyrants.
