Celebrating the importance of wetlands in #TrinidadandTobago on #WorldWetlandsDay. Highlighting some of the special places in #Trinidad that are important for #birds and other amazing #wildlife !

First up it has to be #CaroniSwamp – this beautiful mangrove ecosystem is home to thousands of #ScarletIbis the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago! It is also home to many other bird species, like American flamingos & so much amazing wildlife!

On the seaward side of Caroni Swamp, on Trinidad’s west coast are extensive mudflats. These areas host thousands of migratory #shorebirds during autumn with some making it their home in winter. This is because mud is also home to many creatures the shorebirds like to eat!

Man-made wetlands are important too! Like Caroni rice fields, inland from Caroni Swamp. This area is also important for migratory #shorebirds providing freshwater habitat for Lesser & Greater Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitchers, American Golden Plovers & many more species!

Finally #NarivaSwamp, in the south east of #Trinidad, provides a home to many #wetland & #forest birds. It is also home to exciting mammal species like the Red Howlers & White-fronted capuchin monkeys & an amazing diversity of Palms & other plants

I haven’t even touched on all the wetland areas associated with #rivers & #beaches. Wetlands are not just important for wildlife they also provide livelihoods, food, freshwater, storm buffers, flood protection & many other #Ecosystem #services Happy #WorldWetlandsDay2021 !
