With reports that Quebec will begin reopening its economy next week, this leaves Ontario as the only province without a plan to end its full lockdown. This needs to change immediately.
Unfortunately, Ontario's bizarre lockdown rules were never based on data on the COVID risk of the business activity, but designed to send a message to the public to stay home. This may make it challenging for the govt to change gears.
But there are other choices beyond full lockdown and business as usual. We can find a safe pathway to allow businesses to serve a limited capacity of customers as has been done or is planned in every other province in Canada.
We need to get retailers, hair/nail salons, gyms, indoor restaurants, arts/recreation spaces and many others open safely. There is a path to doing this without returning to larger case numbers. But Ontario has done ZERO consultation with businesses on how to do this.
