I'm not trying to be insensitive or dismissive, but why is everyone focused on the fact that AOC is a victim of sexual assault instead of the fact that Republicans tried to get her killed and they're still in Congress?
Sexual assault is really common. That's not the story (cont)
Sexual assault is really common. That's not the story (cont)
The fact that people are so stunned by the fact that she's a victim is a sign that we have so much farther to go. If you're stunned that she's a victim, wait until you hear how many men commit sexual assault. Wait until you find out how many men in your life are rapists. (cont)
Until we address the problem - men in this country have been allowed to sexually assault and rape women for far too long with zero accountability - we'll get nowhere. We need to stop being shocked when these stories come out. How many will it take? Everyone I know has one. (cont)
The other problem with focusing on her experience as a sexual assault survivor while she's VERY FUCKING CLEARLY trying to draw our attention to the fact that HER COLLEAGUES ARE TRYING TO KILL HER is that being a victim of rape or assault is often used to discredit us. (cont)
Yes, it's important to talk about the way her trauma snowballs - mine does too - but the accountability she's asking for does not look like headlines about her sexual assault. It looks like headlines asking why the Republicans who tried to kill her haven't been expelled. (cont)
When I share my story of being raped, I'm always terrified that people will treat me with kid gloves or push me away thinking I'm damaged or too fragile for the work I believe in. Sometimes I don't talk about it for that reason. Please don't do that to AOC. (cont)
Listen to what she told us, not what you wanted to hear. Then do what she asked us to do. /end.
