My 2 cents on how Switzerland deals with (not) closing schools: It is rather flawed. They say they want to do everything in order to not close them. But they could do more. I'm rather against closing of schools – but not from a health perspective. #CoronaInfoCH
It's the 1st time in the whole acute Covid crisis that it seems the government is forward-thinking in a good way.
Their sociologists (and perhaps scientists in all other disciplines) must be aware of the long term effect of closing schools.
Imagining that a whole generation will live with a educational deficit (even if only slightly) can negatively affect future economy, public health and society. A lack of good education can have a persistent negative effect of society.
On top of that, a generation that lacks year(s) of education will also be lacking a social skillset that is acquired in a school setting.
However, it's important to close schools if the opposite will cause further harm to current public health. But then still, keeping them open and not really adapting to the Covid situation is a poor way of dealing with it.
Circumstances like holding lessons with all windows open seems medieval and also doesn't contribute to a good way of learning. The gov and cantons should invest *now* and *fast* in innovative ways of non-home-schooling.
If Switzerland wants to be on top in a international educational ranking (having schools open while other countries don't will, amongst others, eventually lead to this), it should use its wealth and invest in this now.
This could maybe include smart schedules with a combination of tele- and on site learning. Or innovations in ventilation systems in school buildings. Or a strict testing regime. All sorts of things we'll need to have in possible upcoming pandemics.
That would imo be the only "Swiss quality" way of dealing with it. Education is not only about being present in a class room. The infrastructure is also really relevant. And it should be adjusted in contemporary ways, to current times like these.
