It’s another day in the UK so there’s some nonsense around trans people, so it might be a good opportunity to mention something I heard the other day that I think would be useful for allies to know.
Contra points (yes I know she’s a divisive figure) in her latest video about JKR talked about the phrase “trans women are women” and how it invites argument around what a woman fundamentally is, which detracts from the actual conversation we should be having about trans rights
She offers “trans liberation now” which I quite like, alongside others I’ve seen like trans rights are human rights. Just worth considering how transphobes find ways to disrupt the conversation on even a semantic level, and this reframing of rights and liberation shuts that down
It’s a good video essay in of itself, an attempt to empathise with transphobes to understand the hypervigilance that drives them, something I have sought to do, but I think that point is so powerful that I wanted to raise it here.
I personally prefer precise language — my most common editorial note is probably “what are you actually trying to say” I think anything that diverts from the crises for trans people around housing, health care, domestic violence, employment and many others, should be dropped
anyway that’s today’s crumb of thought from your local non-binary editor
