BOSTON COLLEGE TE HUNTER LONG
the best TE showing at the Senior Bowl
(a thread)
If you look at the Senior Bowl game's boxscore, you're going to be disappointed because Hunter Long didn't play.
He did enough during the practices to let everyone know that he's at worst TE4 in the draft.
He was said to be head & shoulders ahead of the rest.

Now he's solidified his spot behind Kyle Pitts, Pat Freiermuth & Brevin Jordan...
Let's dig into the stats...

Let's dig into the stats...
Hunter Long's College CV is impressive to say the least.
In 2020 he had the most targets among ALL college tight ends with 88 and the most receptions with 64.
His 703 yards was second most next to Kyle Pitts who had 770.
In 2020 he had the most targets among ALL college tight ends with 88 and the most receptions with 64.
His 703 yards was second most next to Kyle Pitts who had 770.
He had 25% of BC's total receiving yards, also second most among this tight end class. He was only behind Quintin Morris
who had a crazy 45% share at Bowling Green.

He finished with 8 yards per target and 11 yards per touch and had a total of 5 TDs.
In all of those categories he would be considered average.

Here are some other tangibles:
He is 6'5" and weighed in at 254 . 83" wingspan (nice)
Age BMIBOA
21.5 3020
These are all good numbers.

I was very excited to watch his film. Productive, typical big TE size...
However, I was left slightly disappointed.
To me he doesn't look overly athletic. I think he's a good player but I do see more of a Zach Ertz rather than a potential Travis Kelce
or George Kittle.

62% of his receptions in his big 2020 season went for 4-13 yards.
22% went for 14-20 yards
only 10% went for 21+ yard big gains.
To me this is a reflection of his average to perhaps below average athleticism.

Let's look at the good:

Good basic route running
Terrific hands & catch radius
Great blocker
Ideal size

What holds him back:
Overall athleticism
Limited routes
Not much of a YAC guy

He's the type that has the intelligence and skills to be a good solid TE2 with Zach Ertz
/younger Jason Witten type of upside.
Solid. Not spectacular.
Dependable. Could be fantasy reliable. Not elite.

He's no Kyle Pitts or Brevin Jordan. He's safer than most options in the class but guys like Kenny Yeboah
and Tre' McKitty have more potential upside.
