Like many teachers in the Northeast, today I'm teaching from home during a snow day. It's going to be interesting to see if this becomes a regular expectation after the pandemic. If so, here are a few questions: 1/
1) Since I now need to have a reliable, high-speed internet connection at home, will I be reimbursed for at least part of the cost? Can I at least deduct some of the cost from my taxes? 2) Since I now need curricular materials at home, will I be provided with a 2nd set? 2/
3) Since I need workspace at home to teach, will I be able to take a deduction similar to a home office deduction? Will I have to itemize my deductions to take it? Will I receive reimbursement for devoting this space in my home? 3/
4) Since I now need to be prepared to teach at home at a moment's notice, will I be afforded extra time to develop the plans to do that? Time to make my records and materials accessible from home and work simultaneously? 4/
5) What assurances do I have that network traffic in my own home, paid for by me, remains private? 6) Will the activities of others in my household be restricted by my employer's demands when I am teaching? Can their actions be held against me? 5/
7) If I use a personal device on my own network at home during teaching, is that device subject to seizure and search? What about the devices of others in my household who were on my network while I was teaching? 6/
These are just off the top of my head. I fear we are opening a can of worms here and we're not thinking through the consequences carefully. end/
