Get out of your head and into your body.

A THREAD on STRETCHING.

Let's dive into it.
Chances are, you sit. A lot.

This is perhaps one of the worst things you can do to the human body. It tightens the hips, weakens the core, slumps your shoulders, & keeps your jaw jutted forward.

All of this goes double if you grew up on a computer like I have.
Pic related, it's me about 12 years ago.

No concern for strength, relatively flexible in some areas.

My only physical exercise at this point was Marching Band.

Notice how far forward my jaw sits?

This is something I'm correcting consciously, even while typing this.
(We'll get to the minimal muscle mass in another thread)

What's the easiest way to remedy a lack of movement?

MOVING.

There are two types of stretches, Ballistic and Static.

Ballistic is stretching with movement

Static is stretching without it

*Your body prefers the former*
Dont repeat my mistakes: Flexibility is NOT Range of Motion.

These are not inherently the same thing.

Personally, my adductors & rotator cuff are tight.

Here's a thread by @AJA_Cortes on the 'standard' movements a physically healthy person practices: https://twitter.com/AJA_Cortes/status/1338515915013386241
Before I got anywhere near ready to start exercising & focusing on range of motion, I was doing Yoga

Vinyāsa Flow, Yin, Hatha

My problem with Yoga, was it was not aiding in strengthening my joints

I got weaker AND "more" flexible (in the wrong places)

Pic related again
In the last year, I've done more training that the previous 26 combined

NOTHING has gotten me more 'into the body' than trying to practice groundwork and controlled movements

Take a look at this video to get a sense of what i'm referring to
Go slow, stay controlled, connect with your breathing.

Belly out - breathe in.

Belly tight - breathe out.

I know i ragged on Yoga earlier, but sun salutations are a great way to gauge your ability to MOVE.
It's important to stretch when you wake up

and when you're winding down to sleep - relaxes the muscles for deeper rest (what relaxes the body, relaxes the mind, too)
Simple tasks like

- bodyweight squats (with proper form)
- arm windmills (controlled, breathe through the rotation)
- torsion / russian twists
- hinges & lunges; planks

all will do VERY well in aiding your ability to move your body
Now, you don't really have to take my word for it

But i've come a long way from assuming that I can't get stronger

Half of my strength was found once I unlocked my body and began to consciously control my movements

Plus, it's pretty fun, too

Last pics. 2 years difference.
I don't want to hear that you're a 'hardgainer'

I don't want to hear that you're weak

The only thing weak about you, is your propensity to change
