Happy #WorldWetlandsDay!

Wetlands are areas of land saturated with water - permanently or seasonally. In Scotland, they've allowed for some pretty incredible discoveries over the years.

Don't believe us? Hold on to your wellies as we wow you with wetland wonders.. #YCW2021
Did you learn about bog bodies in school? Bogs are wetlands, friends!

Healthy peatlands are a source of rich biodiversity, good water quality, carbon storage - and they offer just the right conditions to preserve organic and even inorganic archaeological remains.
The Iron Age 'Ballachulish Figure' AND the Neolithic 'Rotten Bottom bow' are wooden artefacts that wouldn't have survived on a dry archaeological site.

Meanwhile in Dumfries & Galloway, archaeologists uncovered an Iron Age village - thanks to wetlands! http://ow.ly/MHzx50DkUEB
Size isn't everything, but Scotland’s wetlands are the most extensive in the UK, covering >20% of our total landmass!

Used by humans since the last Ice Age, they can tell of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, Bronze Age trackways, Iron Age ritual deposits and 16-19th C industry.
As if all that wasn't enough, peatlands hold a record of past environment in the form of pollen, plant and animal remains.

These 'ecofacts' can shed light on the climate, environment and vegetation to paint a picture of a locale across hundreds - or even thousands - of years.
Although the most extensive form of wetland in Scotland, peatlands aren't the only kind of wetlands.

Possil Marsh nature reserve, which intersects with the @AntonineWall #WorldHeritage Site at Rough Castle, provides a perfect habitat for a number of protected species.
Unfortunately, Scotland’s wetlands are at risk. Over 80% are degraded, posing a risk to wildlife, biodiversity, the climate, and our heritage.

We're working with @scotgov & @PeatlandACTION to support the restoration of 250,000 hectares of degraded peatland. #RestoreWetlands
In summary, whether it's peatland, salt marshes, swamps, fens, wet grassland, wet woodland or a blanket bog, Scotland's history is bound up in our wetlands.
