You know me. I can never resist tweeting about books. So here are a selection of texts I’d add to #OurFeministLibrary, mostly written by women of colour & lesbians. Will update throughout the day.

My first addition to #OurFeministLibrary would be the complete works of Audre Lorde. Her insight into the politics of patriarchy, understanding of lesbian consciousness, and unflinching ability to speak truth to power all made her a vital feminist thinker. And her poetry is lush.

The second wave blessed us with a rich legacy of feminist media published by & for women. These collections capture the ethos of those periodicals, documenting feminist thought, debate, and community.
A/N: I especially encourage younger feminists to read Spare Rib and Trouble & Strife. These pages contain crucial feminist analysis of race, class, disability, migration, sexuality, etc., giving lie to the myths we are fed about how universally problematic the second wave was.

Two under-appreciated gems too often overlooked by the feminist canon. These collections give voice to the experiences of lesbians of colour in Britain. Bold, imaginative writing.

@wordspinster is a feminist linguist whose analysis of the relationship between words and power will blow your mind. I always find her perspective uplifting.

I’m going to have lunch and watch an online lecture about the importance of lesbian herstory now, but will be back with more books later.

Andrea Dworkin’s writing holds the answers to some of today’s most pressing feminist issues: the mainstreaming of pornography, the normalisation of far right politics, and the problem of male supremacy.

2 books on the resurgence of radical feminist activism & thought, the necessity of these politics.

These tackle the sexist, racist beauty standards imposed on women & how girls are taught to hate their bodies via diet culture, photoshop, social media, etc.

I’ve seen a number of women post about how unhappy the unrealistic standards raised by social media are making their girls, and can’t recommend these books highly enough.

Two groundbreaking texts on women’s experiences of men’s sexual violence. Helpful resources for victim-survivors.

Valerie Mason-John did incredible work documenting the stories of
Black & Asian lesbians in Britain, including Northern women! Key feminist herstory.
