You know me. I can never resist tweeting about books. So here are a selection of texts I’d add to #OurFeministLibrary, mostly written by women of colour & lesbians. Will update throughout the day.
My first addition to #OurFeministLibrary would be the complete works of Audre Lorde. Her insight into the politics of patriarchy, understanding of lesbian consciousness, and unflinching ability to speak truth to power all made her a vital feminist thinker. And her poetry is lush.
Straight Expectations, by @bindelj. A fierce challenge to homophobia, compulsory heterosexuality, and depoliticisation of lesbian community.
The Pimping of Prostitution. A critique of the sex industry, built in the intersection of capitalism & patriarchy. Powerful research

The Heart of the Race; the first anthology written by & for Black British women, documenting lives and struggles.
A Kick in the Belly, by Stella Dadzie. Feminist herstory rooted in West Indian women’s resistance of the transatlantic slave trade.

The Trouble & Strife Reader

A/N: I especially encourage younger feminists to read Spare Rib and Trouble & Strife. These pages contain crucial feminist analysis of race, class, disability, migration, sexuality, etc., giving lie to the myths we are fed about how universally problematic the second wave was.
Charting the Journey: Writings By Black and Third World Women
Sista!
Two under-appreciated gems too often overlooked by the feminist canon. These collections give voice to the experiences of lesbians of colour in Britain. Bold, imaginative writing.

I’m going to have lunch and watch an online lecture about the importance of lesbian herstory now, but will be back with more books later.

I’ve seen a number of women post about how unhappy the unrealistic standards raised by social media are making their girls, and can’t recommend these books highly enough.
