The parallels between the abuses in eSports in comparison to Britwrestling are saddening. The more I read, the more it’s obvious things need to be done not just to protect children but also vulnerable adults that find themselves in positions they may not have encountered before.
I’ve long felt that more needs to be done within self employed areas of gaming anyway. For instance, I feel that @Twitch would benefit by offering basic resources and support to those it gives a platform to. It’s not enough to just offer reporting services.
Having areas that allow streamers and their viewers to connect to those who can signpost to support would be a huge benefit. Using multi agency resources for staying safe online, how to recognise abusive behaviours and mental health tools would also be welcomed.
These are all things that charities like @AnnCraftTrust can provide. Multi agency safeguarding tools that don’t just cover abuse, but the vulnerable to abuse. Adult safeguarding needs to be taken more seriously in all industries.
Admittedly I’m also of the belief that public facing roles, even for those who choose to be in them, should also be given basic social media resources, but those things pale in comparison when basic safety isn’t met in the first place.
