2. Sure, to our media news-cycle saturated eyes it does look like he's trolling, but let's bear in mind that DL has zero interest in such things
3. In 2021, we, the fans, have got used to having our needs met by this news-cycle and pop culture more generally. There's a reason why the term "fanservice" exists
4. Understandably, then, we have certain expectations and when those expectations aren't met we look for simple explanations.
5. The go-to explanation is of course that we're being messed with, that we're being teased. Creators, producers and marketing teams have been known to do this in other pop culture contexts, so it's not unreasonable to apply that thinking here.
6. Playing into this is the idea that Lynch is as ironist and a trickster who withholds information and enjoys nothing more than a cliffhanger. Let's be absolutely clear, the Diane team do not think that DL is an ironist or a trickster.
7. Just abt every interview with the guy paints him as startlingly earnest. He's often described in the same way by people who know him. Moreover, his work doesn't feel ironic. Is Mulholland Drive ironic? Fire Walk With Me? Lynch troubles & suspends meaning, he doesn't ironise it
8. You know who's really into irony? Pop culture savvy audiences and the online commentariat that serve us. Hence articles like Variety's
9. Take a look at yesterday's Weather Report. Does that seem to like a guy who is fucking with us? Imagine for a moment that Lynch doesn't follow Twitter and couldn't give two figs for the discourse around his work. Imagine he's the guy he appears to be & that friends claim he is
10. Imagine he's that bloke who gets on stage and speaks earnestly about fishing for ideas and transcendental meditation and the art life.
11. That's the guy in yesterday's video. The one who seems genuinely touched by the fan community around him on youtube.
12. Ah, but he could still be fucking with those of us clamouring for information about his latest project (assuming he has one). He could be killing two birds with one stone. Well, maybe, or maybe he just doesn't want to talk about his work.
13. Because one thing we know with iron-clad certainty is that Lynch *does not want to talk about his work* and maybe we shouldn't expect him to.
14. All that said, we understand the disappointment. We're disappointed too & desperate for news of his next project. He's an old guy - another film or TV show from him isn't guaranteed - but we're still hopeful that the rumours and circumstantial evidence point to something.
