Just listened to @diditcross some thoughts on Gerrard and Lampard. Why have they've gone in completely different directions. 1/
IMO, you have to look at the background of the pair of them - such vast differences. Lampard was born into it with his old man being a key member of the West Ham team of the late 70s/early 80s alongside his uncle Harry. Gerrard didn't have any of that. 2/
Look at who each respective manager have bought into their backroom staff, Gerrard bought in Gary Mac, Michael Beale (once of LFC ladies and Sao Paulo. Lampard bought in Shay Given at Derby but he wasn't allowed to take him to Chelsea 3/
Lampard to my eyes seems very uncomfortable having former team mates around him for fear of comparison - note him going off at Liam Toomey of the Athletic when Toomey asked a tame question about Cech's involvement in the squad 4/
Gerrard on the other hand looks completely at ease in getting former team mates on board - the shrewd signing of Defoe being a case in point and is open to asking for advise from Ferguson and Klopp 5/
I've always been of the belief that a team is the manager in a literal form. Chelsea looked pensive at times this season, scared of their own shadow - although not in the same league - Rangers have looked anything but - and in Europe have looked calm, assured and confident 6/
Gerrard will get the big gig at LFC one day, but not before he does great things at a club I don't have much time for - more of a Bhoys fan me, but wouldn't shock me if he takes them deep in the EL and then with further shrewdness in the market - he should have what he 7/
needs to get them out of the group stages of the UCL as soon as next season. As for Lampard, he'll get back on his feet, I can't help but think he took the CFC job too soon, in part because he may have worried that it would have been his only shot at it 8/
That may say something about his lack of confidence in his ability and development as a manager of a top 6 club, but I do wonder if a big job in Germany comes up in the summer whether it wouldn't be the worse thing in the world for him to grab it with both hands 9/
I suspect there is a job (BMG) with a team that is ready made to Lampard to take over when Rosé almost certainly takes the BVB gig. Spend a few seasons there and if things go well, there'll be a job at the FA waiting for him no doubt END/
