1/ The #DasguptaReview on the #Economics of #Biodiversity, commissioned by #UKTreasury, is being launched today.
It urges the world’s governments to use a different form of national accounting from #GDP to include the #depletion of #naturalresources. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/02/economics-failure-over-destruction-of-nature-presents-extreme-risks

2/ The virtual public launch event at 2pm GMT *today* can be watched at
3/ The final report is avail here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/final-report-the-economics-of-biodiversity-the-dasgupta-review
4/ There is much I agree with in what I have seen of the review, e.g. #Dasgupta calls for poorer countries to be paid to protect #ecosystems & for new supranational governance institutions to protect #globalpublicgoods such as #rainforests and #oceans
5/ But also, #naturalcapitalaccounting - proposed to better cost the impacts of #economicdevelopment on #nature - can be a double-edged sword...

6/ Dasgupta says that 'almost all governments were exacerbating the #biodiversity crisis by paying people more to exploit nature than to protect it' (see @guardian article)
But: #Inequality = impacts unequally caused by members of society. This needs more attn.

7/ fwiw, I contributed comments to the Interim #DasguptaReview published last summer - see
https://the-natural-capital-myth.net/2020/06/01/the-dasgupta-interim-review-on-the-economics-of-biodiversity-feedback/

8/ I'd like to think I may at least have contributed to a change of the Review logo from the one above, depicting ‘economic activity’ in ‘the north’ appearing to emerge in a neo-colonial manner from the ‘global south’, esp. Africa.

9/ I also observe something of a downplaying of #naturalcapital language, for e.g. in the govt press release, see https://www.gov.uk/government/news/nature-is-a-blind-spot-in-economics-that-we-ignore-at-our-peril-says-dasgupta-review
10/ This is probably helpful. #Publicdialogue work indicates that many find terms like #naturalcapital & #ecosystemservices to be confusing / alienating, e.g. see report by @RobFish5 @EiriniSaratsi

11/ In any case, the launch will be interesting I'm sure.
