I always loved Dumb and Dumber. But the joke about not being able to read...ya know cause he's "dumb" and how he sounds out the word "the" wrong for like 25 seconds....it kind of hit differently as a mom sitting next to my child that has dyslexia. I forgot about that scene🤦‍♀️1/
cause when I saw it a million years ago, I didn't love anyone that had dyslexia.
But having watched my child cry about her struggle, & constantly trying to convince her SHE IS NOT DUMB-I just don't think its funny. That doesn't mean I am over sensitive or lacking a sense of humor
And while this particular moment happened a while ago, it's on my mind now for more reason than one. In fact, I saw a TIK TOK today (or yesterday technically) with a song from a musical telling people to "relax" about racist jokes, and I hated it. Context matters. It just does.
I used to make jokes about being Polish, cause I am Polish and also terribly forgetful, distracted, no attention to detail and also too much attention to detail and everything that makes one look "air headed" (ADHD) Until my Polish aunt told me the history behind Polish "jokes."
So this isn't being a snowflake. It's about valuing people and their experiences. And being smart enough to know how to be funny without being insulting. That's hard. But its a worthy goal.
