/6 Got into it w someone not in the biz. They got mad that I refused to partner on their TV show idea. Even tried to guilt me into it. there’s much misinfo out there. So here’s my take on why TV Showrunners/EPs don’t respond when pitched to partner w/ a new writer at panels etc:
/6 The hard truth: you’re asking that person to 1. work for free. Experienced tv writers often get paid to develop an idea & 2. You’re asking that writer producer to devote 1 to 10 YEARS of their life to an idea from a person they don’t know or a person w/ no track record in tv.
/6 3. you’re asking the writer to lend or just flat out give away the capital and knowledge they spent YEARS/TEARS learning and building up on a person they don’t know well, if at all— instead of spending their energy on their own ideas and passions. Even More so...
/6 4. You’re asking them to walk you into a high stakes/kill/be killed room at a studio or network and just HOPE your unfamiliarity with the process doesn’t embarrass or ruin their reputation & future opportunities with these buyers. And if the writer decides you’re not ready
/6 To be walked into those rooms, you’re now asking the writer to figure out a way to let you down and not ruin or negatively change whatever relationship you had before this “idea” got in the way...
/6 So those are just a few of many reasons why “can you produce my idea” at panels/the house party doesn’t get far. It sounds like an innocent question. but all the tv writer/producer hears is that You’re asking them to risk a lot to replace their dreams with yours.
