you think they show DEN OF THIEVES to new hires at the LASD the same way they show the first part of FULL METAL JACKET in the Marines. they should
easily one of the most divorced movies ever made. especially its red-faced insistence that none of these guys are divorced, they're either just going through shit with their wifey or living the life (no responsibility stripper girlfriends)
this is a movie that uses the word "wifey" in the script
the robbers talk like cops and the cops talk like guys who are 0-3 on fightmatrix with their last fight in 2014
all of this is good and proper, btw. the movie is honest in its vibes
as @VoxPVoxD points out the robbers in this heist plan are simply auditing the fed
There's a blink-and-you'll-miss it bit of ideology where Big Nick is explaining the bank robbers where he goes "They're MARINES! They're trained to shoot cops, not civilians!"
Big Nick got served with his divorce papers and the rest of his unit treated it like he'd just blooded in
even if you know it's coming the scene where 50 cent has a garage full of men waiting for his daughter's prom date cannot be prepared for
I appreciate that this movie recognizes that Big Nick is all-powerful within his genre's tropes, but it doesn't like him and it makes clear he's in danger of having a heart attack at any time
George Smiley. Ray Merriman. Masterful cuckolds, across generations. Cold unyielding men who knew how destroy alphas like Bill Haydon and Big Nick
Seriously Gerard Butler sounds like he has COVID lung in this, I'm kind of concerned
all of Big Nick's crew feel like different ethnicity presets on a very bad Saints Row knockoff
the best part of all of these movies is when the bad guys get out of their van wearing skull masks with body armor and ARs and the cops go, "now now, they haven't committed a crime yet, let's see where this goes"
the bank robbery feint is very realistic in that the LASD is absolutely committed to getting as many people as possible killed
this movie would probably be a lot more fondly remembered if they got to the big heist before the 100 minute mark, but it wouldn't be remembered for what it truly is if it cut out all that divorce
it would also be more fondly remembered if the heist were more elegant than requiring pocket EMPs, but, well
standing up and slow clapping at these fed guards who decide to try and effect a forcible detention on a delivery guy off federal property because a lady from the cafeteria called down and told them to
the absolute noise Big Nick makes when he realizes he's about to do HEAT in a traffic jam
I'm glad the internet is here to confirm for me that I'm not going crazy and there was like a seven second sequence in this final shootout where Gerard Butler just doesn't have a mag in his gun
[RAY MERRIMAN GETS VENTILATED BY BIG NICK BECAUSE HE RAISED AN EMPTY HANDGUN AT HIM TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY COP]

Kelly: Honorable discharge.
Ray Merriman knows the biggest divorce of them all...is death
the ending is goofy dumb bullshit but it is the correct dumb bullshit given the rest of the film and the people wandering through it, divorcing themselves
