/6 Our community is highly concerned about the permanent Lowell Admissions Policy change tomorrow. Ever since our community sued Lowell High School for equal access in the ‘90s, Lowell has brought huge benefits to our community.
/6 We understand Lowell has problems with racism and upholding equity for Black and Brown students. We think these problems should be addressed separately without taking down the portion of Lowell that’s working for our community.
/6 Most people forget that Lowell has two admission categories: 70% merit-based that measures the students GPA and test results, the other 30% is equity-based and should fulfill the State requirements. Students from certain middle schools don’t need to test at all to be admitted
/6 This 30% admission is probably not being used up. It has room to accommodate the doubling of the Black students (2%) & Brown students (12%). School Board can take the time to figure out the problem before making the school wide changes that might hugely affect our community.
/6 The temporary policy will be good for the next year. Our school district has until Fall of 2021 to create a permanent policy. It'll be great to take this time to try out the temporary policy and solicit community inputs. The School Board doesn't have to do this in 10 days.
/6 The Chinese/Asian community has been the victims of racism due to COVID. We know how it feels to be targeted. We will be the first ones to help fight racism in Lowell and build an inclusive school. But dismantling Lowell won’t do it.
