I really like this excerpt from 'The Disneyland Story' by Sam Gennawey. It describes Imagineer Tony Baxter's sad, almost mournful reaction the day they started tearing down Disneyland's original Fantasyland in order to build the 'New Fantasyland' he helped design...

"The hardest thing for me was not designing a new Fantasyland, but being there the day they tore down the original," Tony Baxter said. "We came in after the bulldozers were gone that day, and I remember looking at the Fantasyland Theater and the Snow White building."

"The mural had been ripped off in shreds, and there were pieces of the frightening trees from inside lying on the ground. The Theater's two Mickey signs were lying there, and the strings of twinkle lights were down on the ground. They had fallen, too."

As [Baxter] stood stunned, the strand of lights suddenly flickered on. Baxter thought, 'Oh, my God. What have we done?'
"We knew it was too late to stop. We were committed. [But] if anything at the Park was pure Walt, it was Fantasyland."
