One of the biggest barriers to progressive policy on issues like the #ClimateCrisis and #Equity is our broken #FPTP electoral system.

4 years ago today @JustinTrudeau broke his central 2015 campaign promise to end #FPTP.

#BrokenPromiseDay, a thread 1/
In Canada, #FPTP favours centre/right parties like @liberal_party and @CPC_HQ due to fragmentation on the left.

@NDP and @greenparty rarely have enough votes to win any given riding, so they are underrepresented in parliament. 2/
For example, in 2019, @liberal_party won 157 seats with roughly 6 million votes (about 40,000 votes per seat),
while, @greenparty won 3 seats with 1.2 million votes (400,000 per seat). 3/

Not to mention that: votes cast do not reflect voter preference, due to strategic voting.

Usually this means voting for @liberal_party instead of @NDP or @greenparty to avoid splitting the left vote.

So why did the @liberal_party try to end FPTP? /4
Word on the street is: they wanted to replace #FPTP with "Alternative Vote", in which they would benefit from being the 2nd choice for both the left and the right, ensuring many future wins. 5/
Thankfully, practically every consulted expert and engaged citizen, including many voices at @FairVoteCanada,
instead recommended a system that would ensure #ProporionalRepresentation 6/
Against which the @liberal_party argued: a metric of fairness (an equation 😱😱😱) is fully beyond the comprehension of Canadians, happily letting #ElectoralReform die right there on the floor. 7/ https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2016/12/01/13358776
So, on this #BrokenPromiseDay, we are once again asking @JustinTrudeau to keep his promise to Canadians and end First Past the Post ( #FPTP), letting a non-partisan #CitizensAssembly inform our much needed #ElectoralReform
Footnote: If you did not vote for the winning party in your riding, your vote has zero influence on parliamentary seats. Absolutely zero.

This includes over 50% of votes.
