I would like to add my 2¢ as a Democratic County Chairman in one of Indiana’s reddest counties. We were able to recruit a slate of candidates that included a Commissioner, 3 at-large County Council, and even a judge. https://twitter.com/gbrlhoyle/status/1356123041978331139
We also had a candidate in every State Rep/State Senate District.
Unfortunately, none of our candidates were victorious either, however here is why their candidacies were so important.
While out one afternoon, I noticed longtime Republicans putting up large campaign billboards. It took them quite a few days to get them up in such a geographically large county.
Because volunteers for the opposition party were spending all of their time putting up yard signs and campaigning for their shitty judge candidate, they weren’t spending that time campaigning for Trump and the other GOP statewide candidates.
As a result, Trump performed 5% worse here than he did 4 years ago, and our AG candidate also performed much better.
Had we just waived the white flag, the local Republicans could have just focused all of their efforts on the top of the ticket, but since they had to fight off challenges at the bottom, we were able to move numbers for Joe Biden.
As a result, Kosciusko was just one of a handful of rural counties where Joe Biden performed better than Hillary Clinton and the only rural county where he performed better than Barack Obama did 8 years ago. Recruit everywhere!
