Here’s a thread of why I no longer participate in the church. For the record, I am a follower of Christ but I don’t call myself a Christian anymore for these reasons. This is obviously not all churches, and is just my experience in the church, having grown up in the SBC.
When I was in high school there was this five year old girl in my church who had cancer. The church set up a 24/7 prayer cycle for a week. I participated in it. She ended up passing away, and a leader in the church confronted me and blamed me for not praying hard enough. 1/4
Sexual abuse in the church was swept under the rug, predators were protected, victims were blamed, and all while victimless sins like sex before marriage or homosexuality would get publicly scrutinized. 2/4
Being “perfect” was drilled into young people’s minds growing up in the church, myself included. If you made one mistake the church made it seem as if God hated you and you were unforgivable. 3/4
Being a young woman in the church was demeaning and demoralizing. The church would drill it into you that you have to serve the church and serve God, but wouldn’t allow young women serve outside of maybe helping in the kitchen. Our opinions were also not welcomed 4/4
