Such an awesome conversation on our USABOT members page as we discuss the beginnings of the Master Gunner program and it’s development up to Desert Storm. Also talking about the revision of tank gunnery in Mid-70s. So much learning! @TradocDCG
An Example: If my memory serves me correctly, we engaged targets with the M60-A1 Tank at ranges beyond 3000m, at Yakima Firing Center. Additionally, my Tank Platoon also did an exercise there in 80’ with the 5 Tank tank platoon firing indirect fire.
We had an FDC track set up along with the tanks in a staggered formation. Once we registered our tank platoon we engaged hard targets with Service HEP at ranges of 8000m and beyond. We had a FO on top of Umptanum Ridge adjusting fire. It was very effective!
Another: I never served on a M60A2, but in MG school we trained on "Semi-indirect" fire with service HEP. Incredible on a target at approx. 7400 meters. Using the 105D and the QE. and firing table to induce elevation, I got a first round hit. Pretty damn proud of that.
“Some immediate changes after the 73 war were battle sight gunnery with priority on a first round hit very fast or so close that a fast adjustment would get a second round hit. Battle sight was a preset range indexed into the system so the TC did not range. 1/
Aiming point was where target met the ground 2 get a hit or a short near hit fast that could be seen or sensed (no overs). Fast adjustments in "forms" in stead of mils or meters or BOT. Initially we were trying to extend the range to 2,000 & on to 2500 meters using battlesight.2/
