Not to be a jerk, but some of y'all should pick up a book instead of reading fanfic exclusively. I've written 350+ fics. Love the accessibility, the focus on character & marginalized groups. But there are published marginalized authors with something to say, too.
Yes, books can take you out of your comfort level a bit. But we authors are generally good at branding ourselves. We make contracts with our readers based on genre, so you won't get "dunked" on with nasty twists as often as TV shows.
The art of writing novels is, honestly, more accessible to marginalized people (through indie publishing especially) than TV writing. You should give #ownvoices novels a try. Many have similar positive attributes to fanfic, and you're supporting more of the same by buying them.
And honestly, the human brain benefits from the new. I get wanting the comfort of fanfic. You love THESE characters and THIS world. But you can fall in love with new stories, too. Especially when these stories are by authors from marginalized and underrepresented communities.
I'm not saying you have to choose between the two. But consider expanding your horizons. You'll discover some truly awesome, high-quality stories that way.
