I have no sympathy for genocide apologist Aung San Suu Kyi. However, her fall from grace has more to do with the bankruptcy of human rights as a supposedly non-political transnational language of politics than with her own, monstrous failings. During the Cold War
Third World leaders often had to speak the language of communism and anti-communism to get material and political support from one of the two blocks. The collapse of the USSR signalled the elevation of human rights to fill this space. However, unlike anti/communism
human rights relied on being 'apolotical' in order to do their politics. Aung San Suu Kyi (and others) are the object of outrage/disappointment cause they are the living, breathing reminders that besides some Amnesty volunteers , nobody cares about empty universals .
Ι grew up surrounded by people horribly traumatised by the fall of the USSR and the reactions of liberal human rights people (including doubling down) are horribly familiar.
