How do people know they are living in a civilization that is already dead?

The whole time they rode the glory of Rome, but had no idea their civilization died generations before they were even born.

Western Civilization has been dead since at least 1918. The cultural, social, spiritual, and, yes, even economic decline is impossible to overstate.
