Thread upcoming on more thoughts on the Stafford/Goff trade. I promise to entertain you with West Wing and Sports Night gifs.
As anyone who follows my timeline knows, my initial reaction to the Stafford trade was, well, not encouraging. I mean, we just fired a GM whose only move was overpaying guys his previous team couldn’t wait to get rid of.
So when the Lions agreed to take on Goff’s albatross of a contract, I was not happy.
But a lot of people I really respect on here, who are really smart, thought it was a good trade and moved the rebuild in the right direction.
In light of that, it’s worth pausing. Was I wrong?

I’m still not sure I am to be honest.
I still think Goff’s contract is a problem.
Yes, I understand the Lions need to spend a certain minimum % of the cap anyway, so why not spend it on Goff?
But there are creative ways to hit the minimum spend and spend the money smarter

I also still think they draft picks today are more valuable than draft picks tomorrow. Like @davebirkett pointed out today, one of the first things Brad Holmes said when he was hired was he had already done a ton of draft prep and knew this class pretty cold.
Getting a guaranteed top 10 pick is rare. So to turn that down is giving up a lot.
But it also seems clear the Lions genuinely believe in Goff. And it’s not impossible they’re wrong. Who thought Tannehill would turn his career around in Tennessee? Goff is still super young.

Maybe Goff rejuvenates his career here and we don’t need to find a QB in the draft. Or maybe he treads water well enough that in 2023, when he has basically no real money left on his deal, he becomes a valued asset again.
Goff at least does give the Lions a lot of options

And look, I’m a season ticket holder. I don’t want the Lions to line up an embarrassing team next year. Nor do I want to claw my eyes out trying to watch Chase Daniel start for 17 games. So I get it. I do. Goff at least can keep the train on the tracks. Hopefully.
Ultimately, this trade simply can’t be judged after three days. You really need to see the full picture. Does it hurt our cap so badly we can’t resign Kenny? Do we draft a QB this year? Do we flip Goff for even more picks next year or the year after? We just don’t know right now.
Anyway. Did I overreact? Probably. Do I still rather we made a different trade? Yes. Is it the end of the world? No.
I just want this stupid team to succeed for once in my life. I’m not sure this was the best way of achieving that, but since none of the other ways did either...
