I was going to write about Harrell in the P&R eventually, but you should read Harrison's post on it. That said, a couple of points that, I think, add important context... https://twitter.com/hmfaigen/status/1356309258762072066
Getting scoring chances out of the P&R as a dive man aren't as simple as running more P&R's. I mean, you can try that, but to successfully get the roll man chances, there's factors which can help that. Just as there's factors that can hurt that...
On the Lakers roster, there's more factors that hurt Harrell's opportunities to get touches as a roll man than help him.
First, and I think this is most important, the primary ball handlers who Harrell sets screens for are not pull up jump shooters. The easiest way to create a passing opportunity to the roller is for the defender on the ball to go over the top of the screen.
When a defender goes over the top of the screen, there almost always is then a "pocket" or "window" to get the roll man the ball. This is why Trez/Lou had such great chemistry. Lou is a great pull up jump shooter. So, guys go over on screens vs. him. When they did, he hit Trez.
The Lakers run P&R's w/ Dennis and Bron as the ball handler. Neither are great pull up shooters. Dennis is better than Bron at this (or, he uses it more, at least), but both those guys want to drive first. And second. And third. And...you get the point.
When you're such a threat to drive and aren't as much a threat to shoot, defenders go under screens on you. And when defenders go under and the big man drops, the lane for the roll man is clogged. This is happening to Trez A LOT.
Now, that doesn't mean Trez never gets roll chances. He does! But his chances are already going to be more limited simply b/c of who his P&R partners are. That said, when Trez does get roll chances, he's getting jammed up b/c the spacing isn't always that great for him rolling.
Another point that needs mentioning: Trez is not a great vertical threat as a roll man. Sure, he's explosive, but he's just not as big as Dwight or JaVale or guys like Gobert or Jarrett Allen or DeAndre Jordan. Throwing lobs to Trez is a riskier pass & is less likely to succeed.
With that, the better pass to make to him is the pocket bounce pass or the late dump off pass. Those passes, in general, require more space. We touched on his earlier, but the lane is simply more crowded b/c defenders are going under on screens and trying to stop drives.
Those same defenders in the paint wanting to stop Dennis or Bron from getting a layup are the same ones getting in Trez's way on dives. Again, it's not that he's not getting chances, but he's just not getting as many clean ones and that's going to impact his numbers.
So, look, I'm not disagreeing w/ Vogel. I think the guys need to look for Trez more on the roll. This is especially true for Dennis, but it's also true for Bron and even THT and Kuz (who both also get chances to run it w/ him).
Fact is, though, that until the Lakers find ways to get Trez cleaner rolls, it's going to be harder to boost his chances as a finisher in the P&R.
One suggestion I'd make is to run more open side P&R's from the sideline or use more "handoff" actions w/ the guard coming up from the corner where you almost force the defender to chase over the top + give Trez cleaner roll chances along the baseline.
B/c, if the Lakers just continue to run high P&R's from the top of the floor, the chances are going to be about the same. They can shoehorn more passes in there and look for him more in general, but it's not going to be how it was w/ Lou. The Lakers personnel just isn't the same.
lol, maybe i should have written a post on this, but i didn't want to. maybe another day. ya'll be good now.
