If schools did not do right by Black kids before, why would Black parents believe officials will do right by their kids in a pandemic? Important reporting by @EricaLG @elizashapiro @julianahyekim https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/01/us/politics/school-reopening-black-families.html?smid=tw-share
Science says schools can be opened safely under certain protocols but school officials have to deal with fact that heavily Black schools did not have basic sanitation, hot water, toilet paper, heat, supplies before the pandemic and Black parents simply do not trust.
Far more white parents, on the other hand, have confidence and trust that a system that has historically favored white children and families will provide was is necessary for safety.
With that said, there are certain groups who have not fought for equity for Black kids before the pandemic, who have been happy to ensure the most experienced and veteran teachers and resources go to white schools, who are now using Black fears as a shield against re-openings.
