Dustin Pedroia’s retirement feels especially poignant to me, because he reached the majors shortly after I started going to Fenway alone and taking photos—so his teams are close to both my heart and my camera. (9/6/06—Manny Delcarmen seems to think I’ve taken enough photos.) 1/11
Dustin noted in his press conference that he sorta wished he’d been more aware of enjoying his career while it was happening—but I think it’s safe to say he lived the joy as it happened! 2/11
… and so did everyone around him. Especially Tito. 3/11
Scrolling through galleries and seeing him with so many different cohorts of players was a real trip down memory lane. (What I would have given for a clear shot of him with Napoli…) 4/11
Most especially I love seeing him with Papi. 5/11
He wasn’t tall, as we all knew. (And he might have grown weary of it later, but he happily signed a copy of that photo with Richie Sexson for me!) 6/11
He gave everything he had during game play on the field... 7/11
… but it was also always worth keeping a lens on him between moments of action. 8/11
I wish he’d had a longer, fuller career, but will always be glad for the honors and championships he earned (and for that photo with Josh Beckett…). 9/11
By the time he was rehabbing to try to come back, I was shooting almost exclusively in the minors, and it was nice to have a chance to see him there. I wish he’d been able to resume a healthy career … 10/11
...but it was a joy to hear him talk about his family, and I am glad he will be healthy enough to coach his boys—and maybe in future to return to the Sox in a new role. Best wishes to you, Pedie! Thanks so much for everything--especially this play. (11/11)
