(1/9) The importance of Protecting the Rim vs Protecting the 3 point line has changed this year and those who haven’t figured that out yet are paying the price.
(2/9)
# -Defensive Rating Rank
(Opponent points in the paint rank/3PA rank)
19-20 season
1. Bucks (1/30)
2. Toronto (2/29)
4. Celtics (3/24)
5. Clippers (6/27)
This meant selling out to protect the paint even if meant giving up a bunch of 3PA was a successful game plan

(3/9) The bottom 3 defensive rated teams in the 19-20 were good examples for even though they were top 10 in not allowing 3 point attempts because they were bottom 5 in opponent points in the paint they were a bad defense.
28. Hawks (30/7)

(4/9) Fast forward to the 20-21 season and it’s a completely different story.
16. Raptors (3/24)
18. Bucks (2/27)
19. Heat (1/29)
25. Pelicans (4/30)
Even though these 4 teams are tops in opponent points in the paint they are in the bottom 15 in defensive rating ranks

(5/9) The Lakers have adjusted this year by focusing on running players off 3point line instead of packing the paint
Last Year
3. Lakers (7/10)
This Year
1. Lakers (26/2)
9 of the 10 teams to allow the fewest 3PA are top 15 defenses (There were only 3 last year)

(6/9) So why is 3PA a better indicator fo a top defense now?
1. No fans in the stands
-Last year 7 teams shot over 40% on wide open 3’s...this year there is 15
-Blazers were league worst at allowing teams to shoot 37.9% on above the break 3’s. 37.9% would rank 9th this year

2. Teams have figured out how to manipulate defenses that sell out on protecting the paint.
-Instead of coming off ball screens and shooting a contested midrange, teams now set the ball screen higher and look for 3’s when the big drops in the paint

(8/9) Last year Bucks were the only team where their opponents shot less than 25 FGA per game in the restricted area (9 teams this year)
Instead of shooting contested lay ups, teams are looking to take advantage of 2v1 on the backside of actions

(9/9) Obviously teams figuring out how to get more open 3PA and making 3’s at a record pace is a perfect storm against teams with packing the paint defensive principles!
When fans come back will it make a big enough difference?
Let me know what you think
