This is a common question: Did China play a role in #Myanmar's coup? Important to get this right: Myanmar's military is very wary of Beijing's influence, esp. re: ethnic armed groups & major infrastructure projects. Beijing invested heavily in its ties with Aung San Suu Kyi. https://twitter.com/WalterLohman/status/1356339605205876737
I wrote about this @Diplomat_APAC after Xi Jinping's 2020 visit: https://thediplomat.com/2020/01/has-the-us-lost-myanmar-to-china/. I don't see any credible reason to think Foreign Minister Wang Yi had advance notice of the coup or gave his nod of approval to Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing on his visit in Jan. 2021.
& I wrote about China & #Myanmar @9DashLine: "While in the near term Beijing benefits from Myanmar’s paralysis, ultimately peace and stability present greater opportunities for China’s investment aims, cross-border trade, and bilateral ties more broadly." https://www.9dashline.com/article/chinas-dangerous-double-game-in-myanmar
