We need to talk about the DUP.

I really struggle to understand why they are determined to keep their supporters deprived and down trodden. Why do they iinsist on taking actions that will clearly ensure Northern Ireland remains a failed state?

Lets go back to the referendum.
It was clear before anyone even walked into a polling booth that brexit would be severly damaging to the UK and NI in particular. Yet still the DUP pushed on. When they lost, they abandoned their responsibility to work in the best interests of the NI electorate and insisted they
would support brexit. Perhaps they thought they'd be king makers but instead they couldn't even manage to make a decent fist of court jester. They exposed their embarrassing bigoted selfishness to a hitherto unaware mainland UK population. Disgust and contempt rose in
equal measure across much of the country. Tory politicians paid lipservce to them but were always going to ditch them as soon as they outlasted their usefulness. As the Irish border took centre stage the DUP blocked and obstructed every effort to get a deal, overplaying their
hand more than once.

But yet, against all the odds it became clear that the one and only winner in the whole brexit debacle could be NI. In fact this was obvious early in 2017. With a foot in both camps - the UK and The EU - NI was looking like a perfect option for those
looking to move business out of GB. But thanks ro the DUP constantly mitigating against any and all proposals the opportunity was lost. Busineses moved elsewhere in the EU and FDI sought opportunities outside the UK. How could it be otherwise if our friends in the DUP insisted on
maintaining a state of continued instability and uncertainty?

Eventually they were instrumental in forcing out May with her nonesense about backstops (not the worst idea actually and probably the least worse option for many). They cheered and fawned over Johnson when he
was elected leader and sought to continue as kingmakers but it was shortlived. Once the tories got their 80 seat majority the DUP ceased to matter. Even as the contempt of little england came out into the open they continued to bow and scrape. More embarrassing to those of us
living in the province with each oassing day. Grovelling is never a good look. Still at every step they cheered and folowed tories at almost every division. They championed his great Withdrawal Agreement and hailed his deal until they found out what it all really meant. I
doubt the fools read any of it. Probably too many big words.

And so here we are, NI on the brink of something very special despite the best efforts of Arlene and co. Thanks to Boris's blunder not only is the opportunity they undermined in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 202 still
before us, it is possibly even better. Once again the potential is there for truly significant FDI once there is a stable political situation. Find a resolution to the clear difficulties of GB to NI trade and the future could be very bright indeed. The people of Northern Ireland
could be the only ones in the whole EU reaping the benefits of brexit. Prosperity isn't something we have ever enjoyed. Instead we have been a major financial burden to the UK. Finally we could start to turn that around. As a key staging post between GB and EU we could offer
something special for every sector. Finance, software, manufacturing, services etc etc

Instead of embracing and promoting this, instead of using their position to sell Northern Ireland they have decided to squabbkle and moan, bitch and complain and refuse to make any effort
to find a positive resolution to the one dark spot. Instead they must burn everything down with no care that to destroy the NI protocol would have serious ramifications for GB further damaging NI unionists appalling reputation. Why? Why do they put some pretence of 'loyalty'
before the best interests of their electorate? I have thought long and hard about this and can only see two possibilities. The first is that they realise theoir power resides within loyalism and loyalism can only persist against the backdrop of poverty where tuggery can hold
sway against people with no way out. (Loyalism, remember, has nothing to do with loayalty to Queen and country, they have turned on the forces of the state in a blink when it suited after all). So do the DUP see the need to keep their people subservient as more imortant than
improving their lot? Or is it more siimplistic than that. Are the DUP too simple, too stupid, to shortsighted, to see the fantastic opprtunity they have accidentally been presented with?

When all is said and done the strongest bulwark against a united Ireland is an economically
succesful state. This was ever so. It is no coincidence that as Northern Ireland's economy becomes ever more threatened by brexit and loss of EU ciitixens rights that enthusiasm for a UI among the undecided has risen. Are the DUP so fundamental lacking in intelligence that they
can't see how their policies actively push NI towards oblivion?

Or am I wrong, is there a third option? Are they secretly in league with Sinn Fein?
Apologies for the incredible nmber of typos there. I'm sure most of you will work them out 🙄🙂
