First Tweetorial THREAD for any fellow #psychology students, researchers, and labs interested in social media for youth & young adult study #recruitment#TIKTOK edition (15):
Social media (SM) is a growing tool with access to millions of adolescents, teens, and young adults. Tapping into and mastering these platforms can completely change the course of study recruitment. (1/15)
ABOUT ME:
I’m a @Harvard thesis student with @NockLabHarvard & @ShirleyBWang . My D.A.N.C.E. Study ( http://www.dancestudy.info ) investigates the development of disordered eating among pre-professional adolescent ballet dancers. TLDR; I recruited teens. (2/15)
WHAT IS TIKTOK?
TikTok is a short video-based social media app. Its algorithms boost random posts to get a lot of views, even if the account doesn’t have a strong followership. For example, a study account may only have 6 followers, but many of the posts get 100-300 views. (3/15)
TO START:
Click the ➕ button to create your first post!
Select either 15-sec or 60-sec max at the bottom (you don’t have to use the entire timeslot)
To record: Hold down the 🔴 button OR click it to start & stop.
To discard the last recorded clip: Hit the <✖️ button. (6/15)
If you want to record hands-free, set a timer on the right sidebar.
Drag the red line to the timestamp where you want the recording to automatically stop.
Set a 3-sec or 10-sec timer & start countdown! I recommend 10-sec for buffer time to get in place. (7/15)
TikTok gives users free music use. Click 🎵 at the top to explore music & add it to your recording.

“Recommended” & “TikTok Viral” songs can boost views! Many trending songs have easy dances & posting this content may inc. exposure

When you’re done recording, hit the ✔️ button.

Now you can add Sound (if you didn’t already), Visual Effects, Text, Stickers, Voiceovers, etc.
Your best friend will be Text, so we’ll stick with that for now.

Warning: This can get tedious, but I’m here to help! (9/15)
You can set text to appear and disappear at specific times in your video.
To start: Click [Text] to type a word/phrase and drag it where you’d like it to appear (e.g. “Recruiting ballet dancers!”)
Repeat for all text you want included and place accordingly. (10/15)
Now, set timers for the text.
Click on a chunk of text & [Set Duration]. Drag the red sliders to set the duration you want that specific text to appear.
Hit ✔️ & repeat for the remaining text. (11/15)
As you get familiar w/ TikTok, think about how video content can “interact” with text.

When finished, hit [Next]. Set video to “Public” & add captions (150-char limit) + hashtags. Keep in mind when you’re creating that captions might overlap with visuals at the bottom of the screen.

Note: You can’t edit posts after publishing. (13/15)
Tip: Click [Discover] to check out trending hashtags that may boost your viewership. A popular one is #fyp which means “for your page” and its cousins, #foryou and #foryourpage. This is a good starter that increases the chance of your post being boosted. (14/15)
You can share your new TikTok video to other connected SM platforms! Instagram is another big recruitment pool for adolescents/teens/young adults, so consider saving your TikTok and posting it on IG.
IG: 1B monthly active users, 500M daily active users, 53 mins/day. (15/15)
TikTok has MANY other features that can enhance your videomaking.
