1/ From changing the world to making everyday life easier, Black scientists and inventors have long imagined, then created, pioneering works, often without recognition or compensation.

2/ While many know a bit about George Washington Carver, fewer may be familiar with Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse who ended up inventing the first home security system.

3/ George Washington Carver: did not actually invent peanut butter!
He did however invent 300+ other peanut products, and offered other groundbreaking products and as well as research into rotating crops that was lauded by several U.S. presidents.

4/ Lewis Howard Latimer: his invention led to widespread distribution of electricity. He also worked with Alexander Graham Bell in developing a patent for the telephone, created an early version of an A/C unit, and improved bathrooms on railroad cars.

5/ Frederick McKinley Jones: worked w/ Joseph Numero to combine moving pictures with sound, and later, refrigerated vehicles.
During WWII, the military used Jones' invention to ship food, blood and medicines to the battlefield, saving countless lives.

6/ Marie Van Brittan Brown: was a nurse who worked long hours and worried about her children in their high-crime neighborhood. She developed a security system that became the foundation of two-way communication and camera surveillance still used today.

7/ Dr. Shirley Jackson: was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate at MIT.
Her groundbreaking research led to inventions including fiber optic cable, caller ID, call waiting, the portable fax machine, touch-tone telephones and solar cells.

8/ Garrett Morgan: a newspaperman, entrepreneur, and inventor who invented the gas mask and the 3-position traffic signal.
A member of the NAACP, he launched an all-Black country club on his own farm and designed hair-care products for Black Americans.
