Comparisons to Australia's handling of outbreaks never mention the govt raised welfare and covered paychecks for people who lost work. Many issues, but don't let people convince you lockdowns alone worked. We got a lot more than a measly $2000 to stay home and survive.
(SOME of the issues: international students and other PoC communties didn't get access to welfare, disability payments weren't increased, post and delivery services were SWAMPED and mostly staffed by PoC, lockdown rules meant police targeted PoC almost exclusively...)
I don't think its a coincidence that as we started organising for a mass rent strike, our right wing govt suddenly increased welfare and covered lost wages.
