Let's talk about the South African variant and the government's "surge testing" response, now we know that's all they're going to do about it...

This thread deserves a soundtrack, so I'm going to recommend Dead Cities by the Future Sound of London

Apparently there are 105 known cases of the SA Variant, with 11 coming from people with "no link" to travel
Given the distribution, it's likely that these are multiple independent clusters...and there's likely a LOT more than we know about out there! https://twitter.com/SamCoatesSky/status/1356246619017117702

Another thing about the distribution, combined with cases not linked to travellers and the government's "surge" testing plan, tells us they've totally lost control of the spread of the SA variant
Which leads us on to the government's "surge testing" plan itself...

"Surge testing" without other containment measures is absurd. By the time the testing and sequencing is completed, the opportunity to effectively contact trace the cases will have passed
A cynic, might say this is more about "surveillance" than "containment" or "eradication"

The SA variant can reinfect people who have antibodies, and it *significantly* reduces vaccine efficacy...so this government's limp response is going to become a BIG problem over the next few months
History is repeating itself and we'll regret not acting to stop this!
