My story on the horrendous murder of 20-year old garment worker Jeyasre Kathiravel who worked at a @hm supplier factory in Tamil Nadu and was reportedly killed by her supervisor. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/01/worker-at-hm-supply-factory-was-killed-after-months-of-harassment-claims-family
Jeyasre was working 12-hour shifts at Natchi Apparels in Tamil Nadu to pay her way through college. Jeyasre's family say she had faced persistent sexual harassment and violence in the factory in the weeks before her death
A local union, the Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union, says that widespread sexual violence had been reported to them by other women at the factory. They claim there are no adequate protections and no transparent and trusted way for women to report being harassed.
Her family say that last Friday, factory management brought 50 men to their house and demanded they sign documents they hadn't read. @AsiaFloorWage and @ILRF claim @hm did not adequately intervene to stop this intimidation despite being told of the situation
Last year I visited Lesotho where I interviewed dozens of women at a Levi jeans factory who also told me about being raped, harassed and abused at work by their male supervisors. https://www.theguardian.com/news/2020/aug/20/fashion-industry-jeans-lesotho-garment-factory-workers-sexual-violence
@hm says it is launching an independent third-party investigation into the killing of Jeyasre but how long will the issue of sexual violence against women garment workers continue to be widely ignored by the fashion industry? -
