World War II looms heavily throughout Netflix's #TheDig, not least due to the frequent planes that fly overhead at the excavation. The @CWGC commemorates several servicemen whose squadrons were based at RAF Martlesham Heath, just across the Riven Deben.
Perhaps the earliest casualty of a squadron based at Martlesham was Irish airman Sergeant Edward McCluggage of 236 Squadron, who died in December 1939. He is commemorated in his hometown of Larne, Northern Ireland.

During early 1940, 151 Squadron were also briefly based there. During this time, Pilot Officer Henry Coxon Ferguson Fenton and Sergeant Alan Newton Trice were killed. Both are commemorated at Runnymede.

Between June-September 1940, 25 Squadron flew defensive night patrols from Martlesham in Bristol Blenheim IFs. Casualties from these months include Flight Lieutenant Cecil Halford Bull and Sergeant Joseph Beckett Thompson.

17 Squadron were based at Martlesham during the winter of 1940. From this period, the Commission commemorate Pilot Officer David Cooper Leary, who was just 19 years old when he died in December.

Just a few month beforehand he had been awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for, as written in the Liverpool Echo on the 26th November:
Pilot Officer Dennis Heathcote Wissler is also commemorated at Runnymede, while Sergeant Robert Dudley Hogg is commemorated in one of my own local cemeteries at Bedford.

These are just a few examples from RAF Martlesham, focused on 1940 and the Battle of Britain. In a film which explores the ways in which history and the dead are preserved and remembered, the @CWGC's database offers a remarkable record which will remain #InPerpetuity
