Years ago I wrote some positive things about Marilyn Manson's work. I found him an intriguing character challenging the stiff moralism of church/state institutions. I still think transgressive art can challenge individuals and cultures to question often oppressive norms. BUT 1/
I now see much more clearly that those challenges can reinforce power structures as much as dismantle them. Too often, CIS-het men (esp, not only, white men) assume an outsider persona without really surrendering the power and privilege of their unnatural birthright 2/
Being a "nerd" or "geek" "goth" "emo" may change a CIS-het man within the hierarchy of other CIS-het men, but they still have more social power than women and others who don't hold the same social status. And these "outsiders" can be LESS likely to question their own power 3/
I now see that it's particularly heinous that these men, when they they become art/pop stars, often accrue women and nonbinary fans who identify with their outsider personae and messages and are encouraged to overlook the heterosexism of the hate they often spew 4/
This is why it's so important that transgressive art made by marginalized people be centered, though of course those people also need to be compassionate, ethical, self-aware. I've found they usually are moreso than the "edgy" rockstar male types 5/
In other words f@#$ Marilyn Manson, RIP SOPHIE, read this book https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Kink/R-O-Kwon/9781982110215
