Just a small snip from the notes of the original public land survey. My township was surveyed in 1871. At that time, the RR was already built and there were 10 or 12 settlers nearby.

I don't browse this information as often as I should because in MN, we have the "Marschner Map" which maps out the original vegetation of MN based off of the notes and maps of these public land surveys.
The Marschner Maps are all available in GIS today, but he made the original maps between 1929 and 1931. Rather amazing. Read about it here:
