In MM's autobiography, written by @neilstrauss (a lecherous pickup artist) there are entire chapters dedicated to humiliating and abusing groupies. And these stories are written in a CELEBRATORY way. If you google MM the top articles are about his "most shocking moments"...
most of which include horrendous treatment of women. When you print such despictable behaviours in "top 10s" and autobiographies, you champion them. You make them the norm. You feed into the dangeous myth of "Rock n Roll" - where abusing women is portrayed as a desirable thing..
..this kind of press reinforces a misogynistic culture where womens experiences of abuse are denied. The amount of comments I've seen today saying "she loved it really" or "treat em mean keep em keen" are by fans so brainwashed by this dangerous "rock n roll" ideology...
...they would rather defend an abuser destroying womens lives than even consider what the woman has suffered. TLDR: MUSIC PRESS: STOP. GLAMOURISING. ABUSE. Stop writing about groupies as objects or anecdotes. You are telling you're entire readership that those behaviours are okay
Why does this matter? BECAUSE WOMEN WILL NOT FEEL ABLE TO SPEAK OUT IF THEY KNOW THEY WILL GET DISBELIEF, HATE AND MORE ABUSE IN THE COMMENTS FROM FANS. These women have been abused. Don't FUCKING ABUSE THEM MORE.
